A month into this quarantine, I have been into this comfort food cooking frenzy. Today's binge was rice porridge/congee with aromatic chicken broth or Bubur Ayam Kuah Kuning. Bubur ayam is one of the a breakfast staples in the area where I grew up. It's cheap, tasty, and filling. Perfect breakfast menu, IMHO. I used to buy it from the street vendor almost every morning.

Chicken hearts (jantung ayam) and gizzards (ampela), a nay or a yay?.. For me, its definitely a yay, or more likely a YAAAAY, chicken hearts and gizzard!!, followed by a disturbing victory dance movement. I really like these chicken tidbits. Unfortunately it is not so easy to find at our local groceries, so whenever I find it, I always pile them up on my trolley and endure the stink eye of the cashier when she/he has to scan the crazy amounts of the tidbits boxes.

Do you believe in horoscope? I basically showing this skeptical attitude towards anything that predicts the future, including horoscope. So do I believe in horoscope? no, I despise being told whats going to happen in my future by anyone. Ironically enough tho, I do believe on horoscope when they are telling you about your character. I am a Pisces, and for odd reason, I always feel totally related to whatever the horoscope says about my characters. No matter what internet site or magazine I am reading about what a Pisces person like, I can really see myself on their description. Well of course they are not perfect, like saying Piscesians are lazy, I am sure that is just a misunderstanding based on poor observation.

Tonight cooking theme was what the french calls touski: 'le tout ce qui a dans le frigo' a.k.a whatever is left in the fridge. I managed to gather some bits and pieces to make myself a tasty and decent salad for supper. I even found a proper drink to go with it :)

My favorite breakfast is chicken porridge or we call it bubur ayam in Indonesia. Its simple and very filling. I used to buy a bowl of this happiness in the morning before going to school from a local bubur ayam street vendor. Its been awhile since the last time I ate this porridge so tonight I try to make it. Its actually pretty easy. The fun part is since the taste of the porridge is very versatile, you can put any left over food as your porridge topping. Tonight I make Spicy Chicken Heart and Omelette for my topping.

Have you ever heard of Kaempferia Galangale a.k.a Kentjoer (kencur)? This ginger like root has a strong camphor flavor. I know it might sound a bit weird to cook something that smell like camphor, but it actually is really good! This ginger root is one of the most used in Indonesian cooking.

Yep, here is another easy, inexpensive, yummy gizzard recipe!

Another recipe with chicken hearts!

Last summer I tried to grow some Lemon grass on my backyard. It grew but not very successfully. The stalks are very thin, as thin as bamboo skewers. So today I decided to use it as sate skewers

Mie Ajam is one of my favorite street food. Every Mie Ajam street vendor has their `secret`recipe. Thats why you can not compare one Mie Ajam to another. Each one has their own unique taste. The key of a great Mie Ajam is on the chicken sauce. Strangely enough, the best meat to use is not on the chicken meat itself, I prefer to use the neck or heart and gizzard. This time I make mine with chicken heart and gizzard.
